What is Craft?

When people think of craft they either think of paper crafts or hobbies, for me its wood burning. While this is true, the general type of craft I am talking about is the physical result of your artwork. Craft, or craftsmanship, is the outcome of someone’s skills. It is not just simply making something it is the result of all of one’s thought and hard work. Developing a craft means to master a skill.

One could say that developing a craft is like specializing in a certain area of work. Craft and skills go hand in hand. In order to create successful artwork, one must progress their craft. This is because the quality of one’s skill can be directly seen from the outcome of their work. In other words, whatever work you put in is what you will get out.

Craft is not dependent on time, craft is dependent on the amount of dedication that is put into a piece. Developing a craft is like developing a passion. Crafts are not created out of greed, even if a person can gain money from it, that is not the purpose. Crafts are created from devotion to better oneself or even for the happiness of others. Crafts require a lot of work and emotion. Anyone can try to become an artist or even call themselves an artist because art can be anything, but it takes a lot for someone to be able to call themselves a craftsman.

Craft is my craftsmanshift. It is a more developed form of art. To advance my craft means to advance my skill and quality of my work. In a way, my craft is the finished product. Craft is what is presented to the audience. It represents all of the work I put into a project. That is not meant to be intimidating, but instead, inspiring. Showing my craft means leaving my mark and setting an impression for my next piece. It is something to be proud of. Craftsmanship is responsible for bringing individuality to art. Craft is the reason I get to call my work mine.
