What is the Filipino Diaspora?

Define Diaspora:

A diaspora is a scattered population whose origin lies in a separate geographic locale. Historically, the word diaspora was used to refer to the mass dispersion of a population from its indigenous territories.

Many Filipinos immigrate to different countries in search of better opportunities. California has one of the largest Filipino populations and part of that is due to them immigrating in the mid 1920's to become farmworkers in the Central Valley. Now it is very common to see people moving to Saudi Arabia, Canada, Singapore and more.

Erasure of Filipino culture and identity is a common problem among children of immigrant families. Whether it is the child’s wish or the parents’ good intentions, many grow up to realize how disconnected they are from their native languages, cultural backgrounds, and even history. While the history of the Philippines is long and complex, this blog will begin by focusing on the vast cultures of the Philippines and how everything has developed after being conquered and how it has affected the present.
